JOHANNESBURG – The African National Congress (ANC) in Limpopo has resolved to fire seven of its mayors following their involvement in the VBS Mutual Bank saga.
The party in the province also says it’s found very serious weaknesses in its deployment strategies.
It says added to this, it has also found that illegal policies were passed by municipalities.
Senior leaders in the region have been implicated in the R1.8 billion fraud investigation against VBS bank.
Vhembe Mayor Florence Radzilani has also resigned with immediate effect on Tuesday.
ANC Limpopo secretary Soviet Lekganyane says they’ve made the very difficult decision to the fire seven mayors.
Lekganyane says they only observed that Radzilani had resigned after their provincial executive committee meeting.
“In the Vhembe region, we lost R300 million and the decision has been taken that comrade Florence Radzilani should be released.”
He says while there were several municipalities which withdrew their investments from VBS, some did not.
“It’s the authority over our own deployees, not as a council but as a political caucus of the ANC.”
Lekganyane says the ANC in the province will continue to monitor how its officials implement recommendations made by auditors.
